Five Jamaican Visual Artists to Know


Jamaica has a very rich history of visual art, however it has been often overshadowed by its strong and world reknown musical talents. From realist painters like Barrington Watson to acclaimed sculptor, Laura Facey, the country’s visual artists are brilliant and tallented, and represent the wide range of views that add to the culture. Here we highlight five artists that have made their mark in Jamaican art.

Barrington Watson
Barrington Watson (1931-2016) known as Jamaica’s master painter, he studied in London, Paris, Amsterdam, among other European institutions. He then returned to Jamaica to be one of the island’s most influential artists post-independence.

David Pottinger
David Pottinger (1911-2007) was a self-taught artist, who started as a sign painter. He began his career as an artist in the 1940s. The range of his work over time visually documents the realities of life in his hometown of Kingston, Jamaica.

Laura Facey is recognized as one of the most acclaimed artists. Her award-winning work in sculpture such as Redemption Song, and other work can be seen as public monuments around Kingston, Jamaica.

Ebony G. Patterson
Ebony G. Patterson is a painter and mixed media artist. Her mesmerizing, incredibly colorful artwork has been shown internationally. It explores and deconstructs societal norms in relation to gender and the body.
